| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
parked at the ammo lot and walked the road up to start on Jewell near the tracks, because the very start of Jewell wasn't broken out. we thought we were saving $10 by parking lower and walking up, but that is not the case. You still need to buy a 'hiker pass'. If you step one foot on the Marshfield Station property to access trails, you'll need to pay the $10. On the return, we stayed on Jewell all the way to the end, which by then had been broken out by a snowshoer and is well packed now until next storm. |

| Comments: |
Jewell is nicely tracked out and with a few more snowshoers, will be firmly packed. On the way up we followed a pair of tracks that didn't go all the way to Gulfside, but rather followed the 4900/5000 ft contour north to join Gulfside around the Sphinx junction. (i think i'm recalling this correctly) Gulfside is bony. we chose to switch to crampons because there is a fair amount of ice but, we saw other hikers in spikes. All the trail signs are covered in ice and i think it was the sign at the junction of the Loop tr and Gulfside that was completely blown over. Winds were not as high as predicted but a sustained 15-20mph wind kept temps chilly. Completely clear skies, intense sunshine, endless views. |
