Packed out 6-12 inches of new powder, with deeper drifts on Glen Boulder Trail to treeline. A trench existed from several days ago (thanks to Nancy and Pat for initial breaking). Significant ice as we broke above treeline and wished we had our crampons. Switched to Hillsounds and they barely got the job done. Back to snowshoes for the dreaded thick krummholz section above Glen Boulder. We took a circuitous route (warning: don't take this uphill snowshoe track which went too far to the south), seduced off our intended track with the hopes of less thick woods, eventually broke out into the open and reached Slide Peak, our destination. For our descent we generally were able to stay on the trail, mostly finding the corridor ducking under and pushing through the thick spruce. Descended the icy section below Glen Boulder with Hillsounds and spikes with care (crampons recommended). Super day to be above treeline: clear skies, light winds, mild temps. Thanks to Joyce, Theresa and Dot for a great trip to Slide Pk |
