Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, February 20, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot empty at 6:10am arrival, empty again at 4:30pm. Altogether, saw 4 people out there.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I did the log thing, in snowshoes, on the single crossing. It wasn't too bad. Just extend your poles to full length so you can crouch and reach them into the water, stand sideways, dosidoe your partner, and shuffle on down. YEaHaw!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Couple leaners up near Passaconaway summit to duck under. Lots of ducking under branches req'd on Rollins. Goggles would not be overkill.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: If it was me, I wouldn't bring a dog on the Blueberry Ledge trail, unless they were exceptionally well trained and experienced. The ledges are too dangerous.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There's an MSR Explorer single snowshoe at the kiosk. Looks brand new. It's narrow and several inches longer than my Revos. Drawing from memory of snowshoe shopping a few months back, I'd have to guess it's a ladies snowshoe.

Comments
Comments: The monorail was perfect in places, lightly unconsolidated in others, and windblown powder filling the trench in other spots. There's a real good base underneath. I did the loop entirely in snowshoes, though the Whiteface ledges had four or five spots that were a little sketchy and you might feel safer using crampons and ice ax. Hopefully we get snow tomorrow, and not rain.
Thanks to Rick and Ken, who I met yesterday on Dicey Mills when I was up scoping out this hike. I originally planned to do Whiteface this weekend, but after their description of doing the loop, and the conditions, I had to agree with them, today really was the day to go for it.
That's number 16 & 17 for the old man.
