Trail was overall in decent shape. Ideally, a college rugby team would come along and tamp the powder down into something better approximating a nice, hard monorail, but all told, one can't complain about the conditions. By my count, there were about half a dozen souls who passed over the trail from bottom to top today, so it's actually in decent shape. There was a layer of unconsolidated powder that made passage slower than you'd want, but there it is. As tempting as it might be to head up wearing crampons, I recommend snowshoes. Crampons might do you well for the first mile, but snowshoes will do you better before you know it. Between the two, 19 mile brook is packed down pretty well, while Carter Dome trail is still pretty fluffy.
I didn't see very good passage over to the other Carter peaks; maybe someone wants to take that on as a project?
