Peaks Mt. Whiteface, Mt. Passaconaway, NH
Trails
Trails: Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey's Mill Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, February 8, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking parallel to the snow banks seems safer as the parking lot is not as wide as it could be, but if you choose to park perpendicular to the snow banks more cars could easily fit.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: On Dicey's Mill you have to cross the flowing branch of the Wonalancet River on a downed tree for about 20 ft. If your balance is not good or you slip you need to expect a decent fall and a cold wet splash.

Comments
Comments: I was not in a rush to post this as the conditions were going to change quite a bit come the following day and the drop into the single digits compared to our temps in the high 30s on the summits.

The monorail was stable but you had to stay dead center or you were going to go in to knee deep snow. It was annoying, but the warms temps from the few days before really did some damage to it. Once we hit the ledges, snowshoes were recommended and I would keep them on the whole way until you get back to the lower sections of Dicey's Mill as the trail was just too soft for spikes alone.

The following day if the deep freeze was enough to solidify the slightly soft monorail then you could probably make quick work of this whole trail in spikes only.

Between the summit of Passaconaway and the junction with Rollins Trail there is some decent buttsliding, but that is about it except for the random short burst on Rollins or the remainder of Dicey's Mill.
