Probably due to the number of people out there today, there was a fair amount of gear left behind. A single crampon was hanging from a sign just as you get above the trees on Lion Head, and a single trekking pole was about 5 minutes walk from there. Below the treeline on Lion Head there was a pair of trekking poles just before you start down the steep section. |

A windy, but very clear, day on Washington. Top to bottom, everything is thoroughly packed, whether due to trail grooming towards, boots, or wind. There were a lot of people summitting today, at least 50 that I saw. This resulted in some bottlenecks near the steep sections of the Lion Head winter route, both going up, and especially coming down. I wore crampons from Lion Head to the summit, up and back. Definitely bring an ice axe for the steep parts on Lion Head, and definitely know how to use it to self arrest. There were at least a couple of falls on that section today, one of which I witnessed personally, as I was one of the people who fell. Well, slid until I found a tree. All together, though, it was an excellent day, and it was good to see so many people making it to the top today after Saturday's bad weather. |
