Excellent day outside! We started at 19 Mile trailhead to Carter Dome Trail and once at the junction headed north to both Carters and then turned back and continued over Carter Dome and over Wildcat Ridge to the ski area. Overall the conditions were very good. The most noteworthy was leaving Carter Dome heading South on the steeps where the trail is exposed to the sun, postholes were littered about and the snow was unstable. I stayed next to the trail in deeper soft snow. If ever there was an area of 'no fun' it would be the .7 heading up Wildcat - the 2 sections of the trail where there are slides that cross over the trail, the snow was soft and unstable and the thin trail was on a narrow lip that would sometimes give way. Some postholing on the wildcat ridge by a hiker in snowshoes closer to D. Wore only a base and mid layer all day.
Snowshoes were a must.
Al joined for the Carters, thanks to Billy for the good company all day. |
