Parking across Route 2 in the Trail Parking lot, with a small walk to the trail head. There is room for 15 cars or so. There are 5-6 parking spots at the trail head, but the road after the houses isn't cleared and you might need snow tires. Also lots of "no parking" signs around the houses near the trail head. |

Towards Jefferson at the Irving gas station there is a clean, heated toilet- key inside. 10 minutes down the road in Lancaster is a good bakery with good coffee: The Polish Princess Bakery. It opens at 7 am, if you need a hot drink and a treat before or after the hike. They also have a lovely toilet. Trail conditions were good with packed snow. Off the trail, though, snow was above the knee. Tall people may need to duck now and again to get under snow laden trees. We got to the summit in 3 hours- lots of little breather breaks- and about 1 hour coming down. Mostly steady up. Not very slippery. The ridge between Starr King and Waumbek was a rolling stroll. No views at the top of either Starr King or Waumbek, but saw quite a few Gray Jays. No wind the day we went and not too cold, just a few degrees below freezing. A base layer, mid-layer and jacket worked well. Didn't need gaiters. |
