Comments
Comments: The Ammo trail is well packed out but there is enough loose powder on top to make snowshoes a faster way to ascend. A few drainage zones have created under cut snow pack and deep post holes when stepped through. Up to the Gem Pool the trail was packed enough to hike easy, above the steep sections would be better with crampons but kicking steps with micro spikes was o.k. We layered up at the Lake of the Clouds hut just as thick fog rolled over the higher summits. Micro spikes were again o.k. for ascending Monroe but full crampons would have been better. The trail was clear enough. Conditions changed from packed powder to wind slab to blue ice and back again every few steps. We did not linger on the summit with the heavy fog and winds increasing. Still a good day out.
