Trails
Trails: Lonesome Lake Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, February 2, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We got one of the last possible spots at the Lafayette Campground parking area. I really wish they would open up the overflow parking lot in the winter - that would really help ease the parking pressure.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Thankfully, the few water crossings on this route are either bridged (the couple near the bottom of Lonesome Lake Trail) or totally iced over (the lake itself).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns, no ice, very easy to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several. One owner mentioned that his dog's paws were balling up with snow.
Bugs
Bugs: Nada.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: After unsuccessfully trying to reach the hut via the Basin-Cascades and Cascade Brook Trails (see previous entry), we decided to get up to the lake via the standard route. Lonesome Lake Trail was slightly choppy - snowshoes would have been helpful in places (especially on the descent, where we were somewhat sliding in places), but micro-spikes were sufficient. The lake, as usual, was completely frozen over.

Hi-Cannon Trail had a clearly noticeable indentation, but doesn't seem to have been used since the last snowfall.
Dodge Cutoff was packed out.
Around-Lonesome-Lake Trail seemed to also be packed out.
Fishin' Jimmy Trail beyond the hut was packed out.
Most surprisingly, Cascade Brook Trail below the hut seemed to also have been packed out. I didn't follow that trail, however, so I don't know how far it is packed out.

It was a beautiful day to go hiking, and wasn't too cold. The woods are very much a winter wonderland.
