Comments
Comments: Our plan was to reach Lonesome Lake Hut via the Basin-Cascades and Cascade Brook trails. Pleasantly surprised to see the Basin-Cascades Trail packed out at the bottom. We followed a very nice snowshoe track for about 0.6 miles to the first river crossing. The snowshoe track abruptly ended there. At the point where the trail crosses the river, the river is wide, and most of it consists of about a foot of snow on top of a fairly thin layer of ice, on top of running water. There were no tracks of any kind across the river. We were concerned about falling through the ice if we tried to cross the river, so we decided to turn around. We'll hike Basin-Cascades Trail some other time.

Moral of the story: We believe that the first water crossing on the Basin-Cascades Trail is unsafe at this time, and should not be attempted. Other than the river crossing, however, the conditions were perfect for snowshoeing, and all of the tourist paths around the Basin are packed out.
