Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Shem Valley Road is plowed and in good shape. BUT: limited parking at the AMC Cardigan Lodge this weekend with an event (New Hampshire Chapter Winter School): the main lot is closed to all except lodge guests. Non-guests are shunted to the small lot near the Lower Manning (Welton Falls) Trail; it was two-thirds full late this afternoon, with just a half-dozen or so cars. Add to that the fact that Shem Valley Road is about 1.5 lanes now, with snowbanks on either side, and parking could be very interesting this weekend, as overflow parking will be situated along the road, leaving barely one lane for vehicles to come and go. Probably a good weekend to try some other trails, if you don't have to be at the AMC Cardigan Lodge.

Comments
Comments: See our post from a few days ago, Monday, January 28, and add 1-2 feet of unpacked powder to all of the trails, including most of the ledges on Firescrew. Even more snow on some sections of the Mowglis Trail, heading north, from the summit of Firescrew, all the way to the shelter.

For most of the route today, our tracks from Monday were completely gone -- a shallow trench only began to appear about where the Back 80 Trail and Elwell Trail meet.

Amazing conditions for snowshoes -- snowshoes all day.

Even so, this morning, we saw a group ahead of us postholing in light traction while carrying snowshoes. Thankfully, they headed toward Mt. Cardigan, while we split off on the Manning Trail. We saw no one else the entire day until back at the parking area.
