Comments
Comments: Several people preceded us on snowshoes to the Hale Summit so the Hale Brook Trail was broken out but nowhere near as packed down as Zealand Road.

We were the first on the Lend a Hand Trail heading down from Hale Summit since the Thursday 1/26 rainstorm and the Friday 1/25 snow showers so the three of us broke trail until a little over 1/4 mile from the Zealand Falls Hut. Finding the trail was frequently a challenge. (We partially cleared a few blowdowns using a Silkey saw.)

The AMC map shows the Lend-a-Hand Trail making a fairly hard left hand turn to the west between 150 and 200 vertical feet above the Lend-a-Hand/ Twinway Trail junction. We missed that turn and continued more or less directly downhill on terrain so open than it appeared we were still on the trail. We wound up on the south bank of the brook that parallels the Lend-a-Hand Trail just before the Lend-a-Hand/ Twinway Trail junction. Luckily, we could see the broken-out Lend-a-Hand trail on the north bank. So we crossed the brook (which we must have already crossed via snow bridge, not realizing that we had done so) and got back on the Lend a Hand trail about 30 yards above the sign indicating the quarter-mile-radius no-camping-zone around the Zealand Falls Hut. From that point on the Lend a Hand and Twinway trails were were broken out and easy to follow to the Hut.
