The trail was mostly soft, slightly packed down snow so snowshoes were generally the way to go. There are a series of drifts alongside the river pretty early on that steeply drop to your left down to the river. We opted to use ice axes for stability and backup when traversing them because a fall would otherwise lead to a fall into the river.
The trail was otherwise in good shape. Once we started to get above treeline, it got harder and harder to navigate. We followed some faint footprints and used compass/GPS to check we were on the right track but we ended up turning around about a quarter mile from the hut. The gusting wind and snow knocked us around a bit, made visibility very poor, and made us nervous about being able to follow our tracks back. The trail was also getting looser and harder to climb.
We’ll have to come back on a better weather day. On the way back down, our tracks down low from the morning were completely covered so I’m glad we turned around when we did. |
