Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Because of the excellent routing of those who broke and packed Sabbaday Brook Trail this week - and the conditions - the crossings were a non-issue. The more significant crossings were ice-bridged today.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of fallen trees along the way with a few other benders and tangled messes. None of these are a real big problem - more like nuisances. The trail sign at the junction is mostly buried with snow already so it will probably be fully buried after the storm.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn't see any.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: First of all: a big thanks to the folks who broke and packed Sabbaday Brook Trail...well done!

Secondly: this report won't mean a thing after the incoming storm tonight/tomorrow...but here it goes anyway...

It appeared that a couple inches of new snow covered SBT. From the lot I wore Hillsound crampons and the trail underneath was more or less supportive. However as I ascended it started to edge toward less so after a couple of miles the snowshoes came off my pack and went onto my feet. I left them on the rest of day save for some glissading/sliding down the steeps of SBT just below the junction. This guilty pleasure made up for the ascent of that section as the trail cover was in the 3+ inch neighborhood and there was plenty of sliding backwards. Once onto the ridge I was apparently the first one up there today so I made tracks up to North peak and then to Middle peak. On the way out I took a detour to visit the falls - which were mostly covered in ice but still a nice area.

I was surprised how quiet it was here today. I had the entire ascent and both peaks to myself and only encountered 5 others coming up as I was descending. Viewpoints at the summits were wonderful. I know the temps were kind of cold but it really didn't feel like it. This report has been brought to you LackaWind...a winter hiker's favorite!
