Comments
Comments: first mile or so of zealand rd. had been snowmobiled so packed down quite hard. road has not been plowed to logging area for a while by the looks of it. after logging area there is a single hard packed track. some drifting on road on hike in, but packed by the hike out. hale brook trail was drifted over a packed track. depths ranged from a trace to 12" with a couple deeper drifts. upper half of trail had a consistent 6"+.
used snowshoes once on zealand rd. to the summit and back. could definitely boot or use light traction on the road, but you will want snowshoes on hale brook trail especially given the drifting.
first hike up hale in quite a while. was a really beautiful day to be in the woods though quite cold and windy. this hike was great as it was mostly sheltered from the brunt of the wind. summit views seem to get more limited each time i'm up there. still some nice looks to the twins and the willey range. great day to be out.
