| Comments: |
Parked at Cog Rail lot. Crossed stream using bridge on the east side of lot (immediately south of the tracks) and walked up to trestle # 28. Crossed over tracks north and followed herd path up the hill to the Jewell Trail connector and then to Jewell Trail. We were the first on the Jewell Trail and immediately switched to snowshoes because of the 2-3" of new snow. Broke trail about 1/2 way to treeline and was joined by another couple. The 4 of us packed the trail (closer to 5"-6" above 4000') to above the tree line where we switched to spikes. Long Hillsound spikes worked better than microspikes as some of the snowfields required a deep bite. Gulfside was a mix of ice, hard packed snow and rock all the way to the top of Jefferson. Put snowshoes back on below the treeline although several groups were going through at the same time and postholing the trail around 3p. |
