Comments: Wonalancet, Mt. Wonalancet, Walden to cutoff, Dicey’s Mill

Beautiful day with no wind. From Ferncroft took Old Mast Road to Wonalancet. One set of snowshoe tracks was covered over by a new snowfall. Definitely snowshoes here. Went left at intersection to peak Mt. Wonalancet. Next mile was beautiful with lots of snowshoe hare tracks and flushed a few ruffed grouse. Next intersection went left on Walden Trail which was not broke. We descended steeply into the col. The trail on the other side of the col rose steeply. The trail conditions at this point were challenging with snow covered steep ice. Crampons and ice ax recommended. The other challenge during this stretch was difficulty navigating the trail markers. It would have been easy to veer off trail without a gps. At the intersection of Passaconaway Cutoff, we encountered a single set of snowshoe tracks heading toward the peak. We travelled left along the cutoff to Dicey’s which was also not broken yet. When we reached the intersection with Dicey’s it was nearing sundown and decided to not summit and head down Dicey’s. Dicey’s was very well broken and packed by snowshoe and very welcomed by us at this point in the day. Smooth sailing descent back to Ferncroft. We will be back to peak!! Thank you to those who have broken trail and are maintaining the integrity of the trail with snowshoes. Another huge thank you to the private landowners allowing access over such beautiful land!
