The stream crossing about .2 miles beyond the Wiggins Trail junction is open and requires getting water on your snowshoes as you cross. I dried them off in powder immediately to prevent caking. |

Rocket's report on this covers things perfectly but wanted to add the spur notes below. Summary: please wear snowshoes! There is a beautiful, but soft trail without postholes right now. Let's keep it that way and leave the posthole parade to the Ridge of Ankle Twisting Agonies on Old Bridal Path on Lafayette.
Wanted to add that I broke out the .3 mile spur trail listed for redlining as the "Passaconoway View Spur." It felt like I may have been the only one to do so as I sunk nearly a foot in powder only to have a crust underneath give way after with every step. Given the at times steepish drop, it was more effort that it should be. Only attempt if using snowshoes, I pushed my 3 foot long poles down in the powder and didn't even hit bottom. Use care at the viewpoint, it is a sheer drop and given the loose powder over crust, a slide would be very bad news. View there was worth it though, a 180 degree north sweep stretching from the tripyramids west, Washington north, and all the way back to Hedgehog and Chocorua back east.
It was a pleasure to finally chat with Rocket and Skidder. Thank you both for all of the trail maintenance you have done in the Whites and Belknaps! |
