3-4" inches in Waterville Valley today after the snow. Brought microspikes and snowshoes. Could have sufficed with microspikes on the trail but wore the snowshoes roundtrip. Saw about 14 people total; a group of 4 wearing snowshoes, one carrying them, the rest microspiking.
Once at the summit loop I opted to stay on the traditional Tecumseh Trail, and return via the other trail (marked blue). Boy did I regret that choice. Recent microspiking traffic had left the trail all kinds of busted. Postholes further up below the summit made it tough to keep one's ankle straight, and some spots the snow had been churned up so much that even the toe crampon on my snowshoe struggled for a bite. Blue blazed trail from the summit was in much better condition, and during the descent came upon a group of four who had decided to make the entire trail their lunch spot. Had to wait a couple minutes for them to adjust so one could pass.
This trail could use a little more snowshoe action until it freezes up more, or it has potential to look like the yellow blazed section of the summit loop. |
