Did the 6.5 mile loop hike described in the MSG Trail Guide. Starting at the car spot described in Parking Notes, hiked up and over Lovewell and then walked Halfmoon Pond Road back to my car. This road is plowed all of the way up to Martin Road. I wore Microspikes for the entire hike up until this point on my way back, where I bare booted the rest of this road. Conditions and weather were variable today. Lots of ice along the way, lots of water in some spots, only one small section where the trail was completely dry and bare. The upper reaches of the summit and almost the whole northern side of the summit has snow. While descending the northern ridge, there were some spots of 6-8, maybe up to 10" of unpacked powder because it had re-softened. I hate to admit that I post holed some of the way. I would say snowshoes still aren't needed though because it wasn't this deep for most areas and the pact was more stable in those areas. Sunny and low 40s during the beginning of my hike. Clouds eventually won out, temp down to around 34F at summit and some dank areas on the north side. Very gusty winds today but because the mountain is not quite bare, the trees definitely buffered the impact. Just as my hike was ending and as I reached my car a snow squall came rolling in. Overall a great hike in some beautiful forest. |
