Revisited a favorite small loop, plus an out and back to the wilderness boundary. The rain and the melt have done away with most of the snow; I barebooted some of this route but there were definitely stretches where light traction was a must. This includes one 10-12' ice slab on Pine Flats that is bypassable but is angled and positioned such that it could easily dump a careless dog or hiker without traction into the river. Smarts Brook between the junction with Yellowjacket and the wilderness boundary does have some sections with significant standing water, but nothing problematic. With seasonally-appropriate gear and common sense, this is a gem of a high-water loop; both the gorge and the falls were looking fancy today! |
