Had to figure out one with no crossings after seeing the rescue last night on Kinsman. We chose an old favorite. Very different conditions from start to finish. Trail to the 'mile' tree (the monster with the overhanging branch on the trail) was good enough for spikes only, after that you really should have snowshoes. There is a faint and ambiguous monorail, about 6"-8" from start to finish. If you step off it, you will posthole in snowshoes. When we got down it was freezing rain/snow. Temps expected to bottom out tonight and if the trail does freeze up tomorrow, it will be great. Only a handful of hikers today, and more than half barebooters. Shouldn't be too bad.
**As an aside, on the way home, every river/stream i saw was ripping and BROWN (as of 1300) Be careful out there. |
