 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We spotted one car 0.9 mi. up Shedd Hill Road, west of peak, by the gated conservation road / SPNHF property sign. Parked on packed icy snow by edge of road. Drove the second car 0.6 mile down Old Antrim Road, parking at a snowplow bumpout / turn around, which was within 0.3 mi. of trailhead. |

 | Comments: |
While we had hoped to use light traction throughout, the crusty snow did not really hold, so we snowshoed for most of the 5.3 mile hike. The trail to Bacon Ledge, Round Mtn. and Trout Pond is blazed in yellow. Trail is rough with some blowdowns, and while we had no problems following the trail with open woods... when trees are leafed out, it might not be easy to spot the yellow blazes which were sometimes spaced apart. We tagged what we believed was the high point on Round Mountain, and then found a newly placed canister nearby.
The animal tracks on the SPNHF property were incredible and loaded: moose, deer, rabbit, coyote, fox, grouse, fisher and bobcat. Quite the day looking at tracks! Such fun!
Great hike (1 of 3) with JEM3. |
