Started at Liberty Spring Tentsite. Nicely packed trail up to the intersection with Franconia Ridge Trail. Going to Liberty looked packed out. Section of Franconia Ridge Trail between Liberty Spring Trail and Little Haystack was untouched since the last snow storm. My snowshoe tracks should pave a decent way now, the trail has a monorail underneath still as well, no postholing unless I went off trail to avoid obstacles, however there were a few sections where snow laden trees caused me to crawl, most notably on the way up the final ascent to L. Haystack's summit ridge where there was no way to go around. Franconia Ridge is well packed out and the character of the snow was frozen on this day. I used crampons and carried my ice axe but many people passed me in microspikes and one couple had light snowshoes on. Winds were sustained at probably 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. Old Bridle Path was a wonderful alpine slide that went by way too quickly. Nicely packed out. Overall a stunning day on the ridge after a challenging struggle through the woods. |
