19MB Trail and Carter Dome Trail were well broken out to Zeta Pass. The Carter Dome is a little off trail right after the first stream crossing, where the trail in 3 seasons is a bit of a stream anyway. There are a few braided paths, but it all ends up at the second crossing. Thanks to those who laid it out to avoid some large blowdowns and wet/mushy areas.
At Zeta Pass, our objectives were South and Middle Carter. We joined forces with Greg from Littleton and headed to South Carter from Zeta Pass. The trail was completely unbroken past the little campsite just north of Zeta Pass. There are a few dead-end trails there from a previous attempt to break it out, but there is now a trail to South Carter. Snow was unconsolidated and 12" or more, with snow laded branches blocking the way in some places. It took an hour for three of us to get to S. Carter. Due to time, ground conditions and incoming weather, we decided to stop there. Hopefully the trench will survive the upcoming weather and will be a good start to getting that area broken out.
Foiled for the second time, maybe third time will be charm for Middle Carter.
A huge thanks to Greg from Littleton who did a tremendous job helping us get to South Carter! |
