Comments
Comments: got a late start so found ammo trail broken down low. started catching up to folks around the gem pool and moved up to help with trail breaking. probably 1-2 feet of snow much of the way higher up, but started to get windpacked above treeline making the going much easier. all ice is buried for the moment and by the end of today the track should be packed out pretty well. there were a couple different tracks forming below the ridge, but all eventually merge as the trail enters the trees. crawford path had much of the snow blown off leaving just windpacked snow with some drifting and a few stretches of ice and rock. most cairns were fully exposed except on the upper snow slopes on washington. there was the usual ice around the hut and heading to the monroe loop. the loop trail was a mix of windpacked snow and rocks with some ice near the summit.
used snowshoes the whole day. was wishing i had brought the msr tails for the ascent of ammo in the morning, but did alright without. i almost broke out crampons for a couple sections on the ridge, but made it fine today with snowshoes.
not my original plan for the day, but after seeing the conditions on the drive up and a check of the forecast it seemed like a great day for this hike. was windy enough to get my attention on washington, but with mild temps it was a non issue. conditions were really nice on the ridge. hadn't been to the summit of washington in almost 2 years. nice to get back up there on such a beautiful day.
