well packed trail to the hut (most used route goes across lake). after that trails were unbroken to south kinsman. up to 12" new powder down low on fishin jimmy increasing and loading in up to 18" or more on the steeps. last quarter mile before ridge pretty heavily drifted. only saw evidence of ice bulging in one section which i went around. kinsman ridge trail varied in depth, but had lots of drifting (occasionally windpacked enough to hold my weight) over north kinsman down into the col with south. from col in more sheltered woods there was an average of about 18" nice powder up to the drifted and wind blown summit. heading back from south kinsman i met a gentleman on skis who had come up mount kinsman trail (i had pondered his track earlier in the day heading toward the shelter) so the ridge has seen skis as well as snowshoes. whole route is now broken, but not packed out.
snowshoes the footwear of choice right now. used the tails on my msrs which were a big help today.
awesome day. had to earn this one, but it was so worth it. absolutely beautiful on the ridge with blue skies and great views. the woods were laden with new snow. probably the nicest day i've had on the kinsmans.
