Met 3 ladies headed down early on who said they had got 1/2 mile in before deciding to head back. Conditions were not easy and they had shoes on and were packing things out well.
Trail was unbroken with 12-18 inches of snow up to ~ 3000-3200 feet. Turned around about 1/2 way up the brook trail from the turn off the logging road. There were a lot of open areas and mud if you were not careful.
I was pretty spent but still moving when I looked back and saw a guy behind me. I turned towards him and he turned away like he was looking for someone behind him. I waited a few moments and he did not come up. I knew what was going on and said "it's all yours now". He had no snowshoes and was making some nice holes. On the way down I met 10 people 2 of whom had snowshoes. Needless to say no made Cabot today. It's a sad comment on hiking in general when people expect that the trail is going to be packed out in front of them.
It will take a good team of folks or someone really strong to get that broken out. |
