Gorgeous day; about 25 degrees when I started at 9:30am and mid-30s by 2:30, mostly sunny throughout. I put on my microspikes (just basic Yaktrax) about 0.3 miles from the start and kept them on the entire rest of the hike. There was definitely some freeze/thaw/refreeze going on on the lower part of the trail, lots of very slick icy rocks. You could probably get around them on the snow to the side, but I was really glad to have the spikes. About 0.75 miles or so, it changed to just snow on the trail and remained that way the rest of the way up. Never deep enough to need snowshoes (I had them but didn't put them on). Trail is well packed and very easy to follow. Lots of snow up top. On the way back down, the icy rocks had thawed quite a bit, but some were still icy, so use caution.
One note, can people not pee right ON the trail please? Or if it's your dog, maybe kick some snow over it when done? I saw like 3 or 4 yellow patches right on the trail. |
