Comments: DRIFTS OVER MY HEAD: (8 feet?)
Trees heavy with wet snow. Started off in an inch of snow that gradually increased to a foot. The trail is broken to the ridge and then we faced a drift that was in the shape of a pyramid. We both tried to 'swim' through the highest point and used a pole to find the trail base and could not. Then I tried the left side of the drift I found a solid surface to step on only to realized I was standing on a tree limb! Feeling around for depth of snow with my pole again - I bent down and finally hit solid ground, at this point the handle (hand grip) of my pole was lower than knee height. We both agreed this was a great hike, good experience, nice taste of winter but it was time to turn back. Drift was at the beginning of the exposed ridge where we turned back.
Wind, low visibility and tough conditions.
