Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Surprise, Mt. Moriah, NH
Trails
Trails: Carter-Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, January 29, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Pretty limited, maybe only 3-4 spots "parallel" parked, but by parking into the side several more cars could fit in, but there is a hydrant that I would want to stay away from. The footbridge is being used by snowmobiles and could be walked, so there would be additional parking off Rt 16 (Mill St?)

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No real blowdowns but there are many places where bent trees have branches that one pushes through or ducks over/around, not a problem really but dumps snow on the first one through and slows the downhills a bit if one is moving. Trail should be well packed although the steepest parts will probably still be somewhat loose.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog had it fairly easy, but the new light powder did ice up on his paws, and then up high the soft trail and several new inches led to icing on his legs. But it didn't seem to bother him, and the downhills were a blast. The parking area has salt on it so I carried him across it for his paws.

Comments
Comments: Pepper finished his Winter 4Ks, and with that his seasonal grid. A modest but nice achievement for a mini schnauzer, made possible by all the winter snowshoers and trip reporters, and inspired by the wonderful winter hiking adventures of Tom and Atticus. Great trail conditions for snowshoeing; the downhill boogie was a blast for us both. The Carter Range has just been fabulous this winter. We got to hike a bit with our friend Don doing his first winter 4K after finishing his list this spring/summer, and on the hike down met a nice large group we had seen on the Carters previously, and several more individuals after that, all on snowshoes. It was hard to believe that little parking area produced so many hikers. Great day. Great dog.
