the whole route has a good packed snowshoe track. gale river rd. plowed to the first bridge (all bridges intact and crossable). then a snowshoe track until it hits the snowmobile corridor. lower garfield trail packed pretty hard with a light dusting of snow on top. base gets softer higher up with additional powder on top, but held up well with snowshoes. summits rocks currently covered in a thin layer of snow and final ascent has great snow coverage. garfield ridge trail towards galehead and from summit towards lafayette had not been recently travelled. snowshoes are the footwear of choice. could certainly boot to the first bridge and probably the lower part of garfield trail, but snowshoes are a much better idea beyond that.
real nice conditions for hiking garfield. was ready to do some work after not seeing any reports minus a solo trip last week (thanks bobcat), but found the route in good shape. some interesting views from the summit with a mix of clouds and blue skies. surrounding higher peaks were all shrouded in clouds in their upper reaches, but there were nice views down into the pemi. great day to be out.
