Very cold day, but strenuous hike kept us plenty warm. Trails were well packed and maintained, no need for snowshoes at all, but saw some carrying or even wearing them. Just before steep parts of Lion's head winter route, necessary to put on crampons. Ice axe and crampons 100% needed. Above tree line winds were 20-30 mph with gust higher when we arrived there at 11am. Used a weather station to determine wind speeds and temperature. Temps were -1 with no wind, -35 to -50 with wind depending on gusts. Above tree line goggles and balaclava were needed, skin freezes in 3-5 minutes at those temps. This was only a scouting trip for us since we are going back on Feb 6th for a benefit climb - my first time up there, so I wanted to scout the trails out first. We stopped just above tree line and headed back down. Summit was in the clouds with slight flurries it seemed. |
