Good signage and blazes. There is one place near the beginning of Stony Brook where its easy to lose the trail, it looks like it crosses the brook, but it does not. GPS was helpful here. |

To do this loop, you need a car spot. If you don' t have that I'd recommend out and back on Stony Brook. What a lovely way to approach Moriah. First two miles are easy grade, crossing the brook a couple of times. At Just over two miles you'll cross the brook the last time and then the trail gets steep, but definitely manageable. Once you hit the Carter Moriah trail at about 3.2 miles (AT, white blazes) on the ridge you will continue to climb and be treated to stunningly beautiful views along the way. Really I cannot say enough about the views - do this on a clear day. To reach the summit of Moriah you will take a .1 mi. spur trail, climbing a rock chimney (again manageable). From the summit there are views of the Carters and the Washington ridge we had spectacular views with no clouds over the ridge. Returning via the Carter-Moriah trail is less interesting. The top 1 mile of the trail was fairly wet and muddy, it dried out later on. You'll walk down a series of ledges (great for the the glutes), other than the ledges most of the grades are somewhat moderate. |
