Water Crossing Notes: Wild River crossing from Wild River Campground shown as "ford" on map requires you to get wet, I had waders and my partner used croc's. About thigh deep in spots. Stayed dry until the end of the day when I slipped and lost my balance and one of my poles, see you!

Trail Maintenance Notes: Moriah Brook had no major blowdowns but Kenduskeag past Shelburne Moriah had quite a few.

Comments
Comments: Redlining loop in the Wild River region. As mentioned you will get wet crossing the Wild River, we had a time finding a way down to the river since the banks have washed out. The old bridge area is good place to start we went downstream since we were looking for a wide slower area and we saw the cairn marking the "new" trail on the opposite side downstream from the old bridge area. The trail is a steep one cut into loamy slope. Take a left on the Highwater Trail to Moriah Brook Tr. MBT is a gem, lots of crossing, none required wading, lots of fishing holes/pools, gorges, etc. Lot's of mud and spider webs, no one wanted to lead today! Saw our first people of the day just before the Mt Moriah summit, 5 of 6. Carter-Moriah lots of mud and rock, forgot about the great views between Stoney Brook & C-M junction. Saw our last person of the day on the Kenduskeag heading towards us, a young woman hiking NOBO took a wrong turn in the night she said (missed Rattle River Tr) and went all the way down to the Wild River Campground before she realized she made a wrong turn!
Mud and exposed rock to the S-M summit. New trail for us after the summit, note trail exits to the left of where you came up to the summit cairn, other trail to the right is a view. A little steep in sections, overgrown, etc. from summit to Shelburne Tr. Shelburne Tr to Wild River, nice easy walk, we ended up filtering water along this trail since my partner ran out on C-M and we were sharing since then. Highwater Tr along the Wild River was an adventure.
After going down the steps to water crossing, we had to find our way around a driftwood island look to your left and you will see a wood sign with a arrow as you cross to the other side. There is another rock staircase, the trail goes left, we were confused since our internal reckoning said we should go right. We doubled checked a few times with the compass and Gaia! The Highwater Tr is missing in many locations for the 1.4 miles from Shelburne Tr to Moriah Brook Tr. Where ever the trail went out to the river it is gone, you need to bushwhack along the bank, some areas are easy, although there were a few areas where we had to sidehill on a steep slope. You can see how high the water came up by noticing how far the sand stretched in the woods as you are bushwhacking. Great hike long day. Hope the rest of the Highwater Trail is in better shape.
