The goal was North and South Weeks. To make it interesting we did a traverse from the Star King trail head to the fish hatchery on York Pond road. We ran in to a local while we were doing the car spot at the fish hatchery. He told us the gate would be left open because of a 4-H camp. We took a chance and he was right. At 8:00PM we drove right out. We planned this hike before the notorious blowdowns had been cleared. While it would have been fun to to hike through the mess of trees, the efforts of the chain saw crew were certainly appreciated. There were a couple of blowdowns to climb over. It would have been hundreds a few weeks ago. We saw several people hiking the Star King trail to Mt Waumbek. After we passed Waumbek we saw one trail runner. We had the rest of the trail to ourselves. The trail was dense with ferns and some overgrowth but we had no trouble following it. |
