John and I left the nicely plowed Ferncroft lot at 7:45 AM under a clear sky. We bare booted until a few hundred yards below the Rollins Trail junction, then put on microspikes, which were most welcome when we encountered a part of the trail that was an ice waterfall. We took the Square Ledge trail to make a loop over the summit, turning left onto the Walden Trail, which was very (VERY) steep and icy. After enjoying two excellent lookouts, we made the ceremonial visit to the wooded summit, enjoyed another great view a few yards north, then put on crampons for the descent on the Dicey's Mill side of the loop. The first drop off the summit was a rocky, icy, scary chute, but after that we were on the switchbacks and footing was good. We stayed with the crampons most of the way down, then John switched to microspikes, I went bare and took a couple of sit-down falls. We reached the car at about 2:10 in the afternoon. We passed only one other party of 3, going up as we were descending. No birds, but lots of tracks, including pine martens, snow shoe hares, long-tailed weasels, grouse, raven, and mice. The Wonalancet group has taken great care of the trail, including clear and tasteful signs.
