Comments
Comments: This is a section of the AT, so it will be getting heavy traffic. The washout is on a section of the trail with a sheer drop to the brook on the right, and a steep wall of the ridge on the left. There was no way to jump across the gap. So the detour requires backing up to a point where you can either descend to the brook -- but walking up the steep wet ledge along the brook would then be very difficult -- or veering onto the ridge through the woodland and scrambling down the steep ravine slope to regain the trail beyond the gap. Very likely that the trail will require re-routing up the ridge to circumvent the washout.
