Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 28, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sawyer River Road is closed. Expect this to be a long-duration thing, as the storm damage to the road is significant and will require both significant time and treasure to correct.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None of significance. At least one of them is suitable for topping off your water supply.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Occasional blow downs that are easily crossed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Two pups were having yet another best day of their lives.
Bugs
Bugs: It's black fly season. But if you move, it's no big deal. Also, any breeze at the higher elevations of the mountain will be sufficient to keep pesky critters at bay.

Comments
Comments: Despite the cloudiness, it was a fine day to be out on the trail. The way going is mainly clean and clear -- some mud in the lower stretches, but there are ample logs, stones, etc to make this a non-issue. Water levels in the brooks are low enough that anything is a stepping stone, and your shoes won't get very wet. Sawyer River road is down for the count from the vehicular traffic perspective. But as a footpath, it's great. Still nearly flat, and you'll be able to walk at better than a 3 MPH pace without problems -- meaning the trailhead is about 45 minutes from the car, max. Don't wait for the Forest Service to get their act together. Just hike!

Also, be aware that the summit tower is currently off-limits (per the USFS) beyond the first couple of steps. Basically, you've got somewhere to sit when you take lunch, but that's it.

Blog has pictures (including road damage), and a more granular write up.
