Comments
Comments: for the most part the route is hardpack and ice with a layer of fresh powder on top. lots of partially exposed rock through the ravine and on the exit from it. pretty thin coverage continued to the ridge where snow got deeper heading toward middle peak. trickiest hiking is on the final push up north peak. icy ledges necessitated care particularly descending. numerous small water crossings were partially frozen and easily rock hopped. one blowdown on lower pinebend brook trail adjacent to logging area. scaur ridge trail was travelled. one set of older prints coming up sabbaday.
i used hillsound spikes up and back. wouldn't have wanted anything less aggressive than spikes and could have used more of a crampon descending north peak. much of the base under the new powder is ice making traction pretty mandatory. many out today were using crampons up high. i stashed my snowshoes once i hit the ravine and it became clear that the snow coverage wasn't getting any heavier. so right now light traction with a more aggressive back up seems like the best bet for these peaks.
nice day on tripyramid. this peak never fails to impress me with how rugged it is even after numerous climbs. a light snow was falling most of the day and the route was pretty well protected from the wind. lots of folks out today. good to see some familiar faces. great day out.
