Packed snow in the morning that made for swift hiking with microspikes - hit the summit in about the same time as I do in dry summer conditions. The snow turned sticky and then a bit slushy toward the bottom on the descent as the sun came out. We wore microspikes the whole way but the one pair ahead of us bare booted the whole way and this seemed fine. We saw many more people on the descent, and they were probably 50% bare boot and 50% microspikes. A lot of people were carrying snowshoes but they definitely weren't needed.
It was a beautiful, clear, sunny day in the whites - windy up top but with hat/gloves and a windbreaker we stayed warm. |
