Comments
Comments: hancock notch trail a relatively solid base of wet snow well packed. initial mile or so got pretty slushy and thin by the afternoon. cedar brook trail much the same. hancock loop wet packed snow with some borderline icy/slushy sections on the steeps. across the ridge the snow was quite soft and wet and i ended up punching through even with snowshoes in spots. water crossings were all semi-bridged and not a problem though how solid they will stay is in question until things cool off. a few stepover blowdowns on cedar brook trail.
snowshoes recommended. i brought light crampons for the possibly tricky descent of south peak, but snowshoes were the tool of choice. some were booting it and doing alright, but i wouldn't suggest heading up there without snowshoes.
another exceptionally warm day. very late april/early may feeling out there. great to see dave at the trailhead and to meet thor. another nice loop of the hancocks.
