Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Carter Dome, NH
Trails
Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail, Carter Moriah Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, January 1, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I got one of the last spots around 9. Lot was about the same on my return early pm.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Spring Snow
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock jumps. Bridges breaking down on a couple but still no problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: What a difference 2 days make. All the remaining bendovers from 2 days ago were gone as the heavy snow blankets had melted and fallen off. The wet areas were a little bigger but no problem since wet paws or snowshoes were not a risk. 19 Mile well packed and consolidated; could be barebooted. Carter Dome fairly well consolidated to Zeta Pass but snowshoes best for traction and keeping a nice trench. Up to Carter Dome trail is consolidated but uneven; snowshoes should be used. Dave sawed out one problem blowdown on the upper Carter Dome.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy day for the mighty tough little dog. I used vaseline for his paws, but there was no icing because of the easy packed trails. We met Cody, a very nice retriever, who was having a good time, although Pepper the selfish made sure he didn't get near the jerky at snack time.

Comments
Comments: The trails were so fast today; I finished two hours faster than my Carters hike two days ago, even with longer stops. This was the day to do all 3 peaks, which is what Dave & Cody, and Steve were doing. It was great meeting and sharing some stories with them. Could you hear us Georg? The views were limited from Carter Dome; the temps quite mild (almost 44 on Carter Dome, and the trails not very busy after passing a couple overnighter groups. We met one guy who came up Carter Moriah from the hut and he said it was hard work for nearly 2 hours with the snow being so soft. The trail to Hight had been broken by perhaps one person a day or two earlier, but it probably would have been soft too. We may have spent as much time driving as hiking today, but it great fun.
