First half mile is a combination of ice and shallow snow cover with a firm monorail. Many sections that are thawed. I would recommend only spikes if the weather is cold, since it's seen mostly boot traffic and the trail is rough and not a lot of fun if you're using snowshoes. The last .2 miles of the summit trail is basically impassible with snowshoes due to some incredible postholing. If conditions are warmer, you may want snowshoes for your descent, but those with young knees should be able to manage in spikes, although you don't want to step of the monorail, the snow is still very deep on the top half of the mountain. |
