Comments: In the unforgettable words of the renown Schorrman "If you have extra time - take the shortcut." It being a gorgeous day I knew I would be going out onto the Cabot scree slopes. While I'm walking up the lower logging road part of the Bunnell Notch I can see the scree slopes dazzling white in the morning sun. Remembering a long ago post from someone who came down from the scree (Jeremy? Zach? Wild Bill C.) and not being very excited about the tedium of the Bunnel Notch trail I decide to 'whack up to the scree. From the point where the trail gets back alongside the stream I 'whacked straight up. The lower half was through open birch glades on firm, frozen snow. I passed a couple vernal pools in the making. Once the woods turned to firs the snow became somewhat softer but I was not sinking in appreciably. I climbed up the lower steeps before the lower scree field. From there I could see that the lower scree field is stupid steep so I went off to the East and over the Eastern edge of the lower scree field. As I said, stupid steep - the views were fantastic! Being this far to the East meant I did not cross the wide open area of the upper scree. Still fine views over the low trees. My additional reward was the wide open woods on the ridge above the upper scree. Absolutely gorgeous in the bright sun and blue sky. I did not consider the outhouse to be the least bit appropriate ending to a fine fun filled 'whack.
About that shortcut : the map says I started 'whacking about 1 1/2 miles from the trailhead. My GPS says I whacked 1.8 miles to the summit of Cabot. So I figure that's about a little over 3 miles TH to summit vs under 5 on the trails. As the Schorrman says "If you have the time - take the shortcut"
