Started fairly early to avoid melting. The lower part of the trail is bare boots or just spikes. After about a mile the snow deepens and the sun hits it. From here until the steeps someone had bare booted and postholed the trail. It was slow, careful walking. Once on the steeps though someone had glissaded and while sometimes this can make it icy we were met with perfect styrofoam snow that was easy to climb with just light traction. If you want televators, snowshoes would have been fine here. These conditions held all the way to Middle and half way back to North. This is when we started seeing more holes from those that came after us with the warming conditions. Still not horrible but not the perfect conditions we had. The trail meanders a bit from the actual trail in the Scaur area but gets you there. Once off the steeps the sun and heavy traffic made the exit a slog. Went to snowshoes and we were able to move much quicker. Won't fix the trail unfortunately. Temps and views were outstanding. |
