Decided to hike up the Benton Trail regardless of extra mileage from the road and was rewarded greatly. 1.4 mile road walk to the trailhead is packed well. Benton Trail was getting soft late in the day but still manageable. There appears to be a lot of logging in the area including trees marked within 10 feet of the trail so I am uncertain if a reroute will be in need sooner than later. Trail for the most part follows the ridge with seldom steep sections. Steady uphill from start to finish but manageable. From the junction of the Benton Trail and Beaver Brook it was a windless sunny clear day above treeline. Only person in the lot from start to finish and when driving past Beaver brook lot it was empty as well. Approx 20 folks on the summit had come up from the lodge. Highly recommend hiking this route if your up for the extra mileage and are looking for some solitude. Snowshoes with be required going forward based on how high the sun is getting and the duration it stays out early in the spring. Trail conditions deteriorated through the day. Approx 4 to 6 feet of snow on the sides of the trail and plenty in the spruces as you pass under them!Look forward to hiking this in the summer again! |
