Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Trails
Trails: Mt. Tremont Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 18, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Roadside parking is possible in a few spots close to the trailhead - the shoulders are plowed enough to get vehicles completely over the white line, but not completely off the pavement. Easily enough room for the three vehicles that were there today. The trailhead is marked only by a small trail sign - it's very easy to miss.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There were a few, but they were not difficult.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No blowdowns (or at least, if there were, the packed trail goes around them). It was somewhat difficult to find the trail in places higher up due to sparse blazing and the huge amount of snow. We did notice that the color of the blazes seems to go back and forth between blue and yellow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Would've had no issues with the packed portion of the trail. Probably would've struggled (as we did) with the unpacked portion.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: What a great day to be outside! Was pleasantly surprised to see the trail packed out from the trailhead. Parking was slightly sketchy but good enough. The trail was fairly solidly packed out up until the (I believe) last crossing of Stony Brook. I'd still recommend snowshoes for the entire trail, because 1) barebooters would probably sink a little bit into it, and 2) the televators on our snowshoes helped a lot with the steeper sections. After that brook crossing, the trail was not packed out. It seems that whoever packed out the trail up to that point couldn't find where the trail went, and decided to turn around. Some of us still had some energy, so we decided to continue and see how far we could go. Higher up, the snow depths increased to about 30", and we didn't make it past about 70 percent of the way up. Therefore, the trail is NOT packed out all the way to the summit. Descent was much quicker.

The weather was actually really nice - clear blue skies, not too warm that we had to remove lots of layers, not too cold that we were uncomfortable, not too much wind. It's truly a winter wonderland out there!
