Did this one with Monica, Cesar, and Tabitha. The forecast was cold and windy. The original plan was to do counterclockwise loop of Lincoln and Lafayette but decided to switch it to a clockwise loop so the wind would be at our back and not in our face. We contemplated other hikes but Cesar was hoping to finish his Winter 48 with these being his final two. Figured we’d go as far as we could - if the forecast was right we’d turn back but if it was wrong we’d continue on. It was right. We got to the final protected section about a half mile from the summit, assessed the conditions, and decided to turn around. Probably could have made Lafayette but the trek over to ridge was not going to be fun so we’ll come back another day. Used snowshoes the whole day - the trail is now packed down pretty well. There were some steps before us who did the hard part. About 15 people out on the the trail - five with snowshoes, three with skis, the rest were just wearing microspikes, which considering the conditions I can’t imagine made any difference whatsoever as they sunk into the soft snow. |
